Background

Tomas Coates Ulrichsen joined the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy at the University of Cambridge in May 2012 as a Research Associate. His overall research interest lies in understanding how a nation’s university base, through its partnerships with industry, can drive technological innovation, industrial transformation and economic growth.

He is an expert adviser to government funding agencies on knowledge exchange, and his work on the impact of knowledge exchange funding has been instrumental in providing a robust evidence base to support their policy development and evaluation work.

Prior to joining CSTI, Tomas was an Assistant Director of a leading economic policy consultancy, Public and Corporate Economic Consultants (PACEC). At PACEC he worked extensively on policy evaluation and related analyses relating to knowledge exchange funding in universities. He directed and managed a number of high-profile evaluations of knowledge exchange and innovation-related funding programmes for a range of UK government agencies.

He has an M.Phil in Economics from the Faculty of Economics, University of Cambridge and a M.Eng in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College London, where his dissertation focused on turbulent boundary layers under varying shear conditions.
