“Industrial Strategy has returned to intellectual fashion and political respectability. But what does it mean for a medium-sized open economy like Britain in a world of geo-political confrontation and growing protectionism? And how do we embed industrial strategy as part of a political consensus?”
In this Babbage Lecture, Sir Vince Cable will examine these two critical questions at a time when growth is at the heart of the UK government agenda as they, along with many other nations, seek to develop and deliver an effective industrial strategy.
The Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable was Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills in the Coalition Government (2010-15) and led the Coalition’s Industrial Strategy. Subsequently, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. Before becoming an MP in 1997 was Chief Economist at Shell having earlier read Natural Science and Economics at Fitzwilliam College Cambridge and obtained a PhD at Glasgow University where he taught Economics.
Along with holding various academic positions at the LSE, Nottingham University and St Mary’s and Honorary Fellowships at Fitzwilliam College Cambridge and the City Lit, Vince is Director of the Hydrogen infrastructure company, Element 2, campaigns as Vice-President of the European Movement, and was recently appointed Freeman of the City of London. His most recent books include How to be a Politician (Penguin/Ebury), and The Chinese Conundrum (Alma Press) along with the pamphlet for Radix, ’The Return of Industrial Strategy’.
Drinks and networking will be available after the lecture.
