The role of Development Finance Institutions in the green transition

Published on November 4th 2025

Cambridge Industrial Innovation Policy (CIIP) is collaborating with Brazil’s Centre for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE) and the Brazilian Development Association (ABDE) on a project exploring how Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) can drive the green transition. Funded by the Open Society Foundations (OSF), the project examines how DFIs mobilise finance and design strategies to promote sustainable industrial transformation.

Key outputs include:

  • A conceptual framework on the role of DFIs in the green transition;
  • A structured framework of financing mechanisms and strategies;
  • A mapping of the Brazilian DFI landscape and green transition funding mechanisms;
  • Five international case studies illustrating effective DFI practices in supporting clean energy, sustainable infrastructure and bioeconomy initiatives;
  • An event in Brazil to disseminate and discuss the project’s findings with key stakeholders.

The findings will inform future policy recommendations and international dialogue on sustainable finance, including discussions at COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
