CIIP visits leading research institutes in China

Published on April 30th 2025

Carlos López-Gómez and Zongshuai Fan from Cambridge Industrial Innovation Policy (CIIP) recently spent several days in Beijing visiting leading research institutes at Tsinghua University and Peking University.

The visits included discussions with scholars from the Institute for Chinese Development Strategy of Engineering & Technology (Tsinghua University), the Institute of New Structural Economics (Peking University), and the Centre for Industrial Development and Environmental Governance (Tsinghua University). These organisations play a central role in shaping how innovation and industrial performance are understood and tracked in China.

During the meetings, Carlos López-Gómez presented the recently released UK Innovation Report 2025, while Zongshuai Fan provided an overview of CIIP and IfM Engage. Conversations provided valuable insights into current international approaches to innovation studies and offered an opportunity to reflect on different methodologies used in the field. These exchanges will help the CIIP improve the future editions of the UK Innovation Report and related research. Further discussions covered range of areas, including industrial innovation policy, emerging technologies, regional development, and the green transition.

The visit strengthened academic ties and mutual understanding between CIIP and leading Chinese institutions.
